Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026 from art photonics!

If you look closely at our holiday card this year, you might notice a familiar tool in an unfamiliar setting. Yes, that is one of our probes in the wine glass! It is a little nod to who we are: even when we are celebrating, we never stop thinking about the science that brings us […]

Application Note: Monitoring Ethanol Evaporation in Mulled Wine using Fiber-Based MIR Spectroscopy

Believe it or not, Christmas 2025 is fast approaching. For many, the holiday season is synonymous with traditional markets and the comfort of a hot cup of mulled wine. However, there is a genuine scientific reason why you should never let your Glühwein boil, and it goes beyond simple culinary advice. In our latest Application […]

Webinar: Combi Probes - Solving the "Blind Spot" of Single-Mode Spectroscopy

In complex chemical analysis and biomedical diagnostics, relying on a single spectroscopic technique often results in a "blind spot." While Near-Infrared (NIR) offers speed, it frequently lacks specificity. Raman spectroscopy provides a precise molecular fingerprint but often battles fluorescence interference. Mid-IR offers excellent structural detail but is limited by shallow penetration depths. The Challenge: Spatial […]

Application Note: Comparing Compact NIR Spectrometers for Polymer Identification

Posted on:
10 October 2025

How do you ensure rapid and reliable polymer identification in your process?

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a powerful, non-destructive technology for quality control, recycling, and in-line monitoring. But with various compact spectrometers on the market, choosing the right one for your specific setup is critical.

Our new application note offers a direct performance comparison, using our Diffuse Reflectance Fiber Probe to analyze six common polymers. We investigated different spectroscopic methods to provide clear, actionable insights.

Key takeaways from our study:

Clear Discrimination: Both Fabry-Pérot and grating-based spectrometers can successfully discriminate between all six polymer classes.

Bulk vs. Granule: We found improved class separation in bulk measurements due to the averaging of scattering effects, a key consideration for in-situ analysis.

Performance Differences: While the Fabry-Pérot based spectrometer provided better class resolution in a simpler model, the grating-based system is often faster and better suited for rapid process control.

This research proves the feasibility of using compact spectrometers with fiber probes for robust polymer analysis.
