Application Note: Air vs. Water: Finding the Optimal Reference for NIR Spectroscopy

The optimal choice of a spectral reference is important for building accurate calibration models. In our latest publication of Application Notes, art photonics explores the practical differences between using air and water as references in the quantitative analysis of liquid solutions. NIR-spectroscopy is widely used for quantitative analysis of solid and liquid samples. When measuring […]

Application Note: Measuring Ethanol and Methanol Mixtures with ATR Fiber Probes

In the high-stakes environment of complex chemical processing, the ability to distinguish and quantify components like ethanol and methanol in real-time is often the deciding factor between a strictly controlled reaction and an off-spec batch. Traditionally, operators have relied on manual extraction for laboratory analysis. However, this method introduces significant delays and safety risks that […]

Application Note: Polymer Classification with NIR Spectroscopy with Fiber-Optic Probes

Posted on:
25 April 2025

Reliable identification and classification of raw polymer materials are essential for quality control and efficient processing.

Did you know that near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with advanced fiber-optic probes offers a powerful solution? This technique allows for rapid, non-destructive analysis outside the lab, making it possible to perform measurements right in the field or directly online.

art photonics' Diffuse Reflectance Fiber Optic Probes are designed for remote spectroscopy, collecting data needed for these demanding applications. The data is then processed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which enables the classification of various polymer raw materials, even when their spectra overlap.

Our latest application note demonstrates the successful classification of key polymers such as:

• Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
• Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
• Polypropylene (PP)
• Polycarbonate (PC)
• Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)

This capability makes near-infrared spectroscopy with fiber probes an optimal tool for developing robust Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and automated process control systems in the plastics industry.

To learn more about the methodology and results, please explore our new Application Note.
