Mid-IR fiber probes in cancer diagnostic
FTIR spectroscopy possesses wide potential as the technique for difference between normal and neoplastic tissues. This technique, being reagent free, can rapidly and non invasively detect changes in the biochemical composition of cells and tissues at the molecular level.
Areas where FTIR-spectroscopy may be used in cancer diagnosis are:
- Differentiation of normal and diseased tissues in organs, detection of early stages of malignancy
- Monitoring abnormal cell growth and proliferation in tissue sections
- Distinguishing between normal and abnormal cell-cell scrapings & biopsies from smaller organs
- Differentiation between cancer and other pathologic conditions with similar clinical manifestation
- Monitoring the effect of anticancer therapy – chemotherapy
